Maintaining good oral health is essential for seniors for several reasons:
Dental services for Alberta’s senior citizens encompass a range of specialized care and treatment tailored to address the unique oral health needs that often arise with aging.
Preventive care is paramount, involving regular check-ups, cleanings, and screenings for conditions like gum disease and oral cancer. Given that seniors may be more susceptible to issues such as dry mouth, tooth decay, and tooth loss, restorative services such as dental fillings, dental crowns, bridges, and dentures become essential. Periodontal care to manage and prevent gum disease is also a significant component of dental care for seniors. Additionally, dental services for seniors may include addressing issues related to oral appliances like dentures and ensuring proper fit and function.
To enhance overall well-being, dentists may collaborate with healthcare providers to integrate oral health into comprehensive geriatric care for senior patients. The goal is to promote a healthy, functional, and pain-free oral environment for seniors, contributing to their overall comfort and quality of life. Accessible dental services are essential to ensure that seniors can maintain optimal oral health as they age.

Maintaining oral health is essential for all ages. While seniors may require some special considerations, there are some tips that can help all seniors with their dental health:
Brush and Floss Regularly — Brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily are important considerations no matter your age. If you have trouble flossing with traditional dental floss, there are a variety of tools available to make it easier.
Hydrate — Hydration is essential to your overall health, including your oral health. Dehydration and a dry mouth can lead to bad breath, increased decay, and other problems. If you take medications that cause dry mouth, let us know, and we can help you work out a plan to minimize dry mouth and the associated issues it can cause.
Avoid Smoking — In addition to increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and a long list of other serious health concerns, smoking is terrible for your mouth!
Take Care of Appliances — False teeth, bridgework, and other dental appliances require regular care and cleaning. If not properly cared for, they can contribute to a variety of issues, including pain, discomfort, bad breath, and more.
Practice Proper Toothbrush Care — Properly care for your toothbrush by rinsing it well and storing it in a way that it can dry out completely between uses. Toothbrushes should be replaced quarterly. Not sure what type of toothbrush is best for you? We can help!
See Your Dentist Regularly — Regular cleanings and exams are essential to both oral and overall health.
Seniors often face a variety of dental conditions and problems that are unique to their age group. Some common dental issues for seniors include:
Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease) — Aging can make gums more susceptible to infections, leading to gum disease. This condition can range from mild gingivitis to more severe forms that may result in tooth loss if left untreated.
Tooth Decay and Cavities — Seniors may experience an increased risk of tooth decay, especially if they have exposed tooth roots due to receding gums or if they are taking medications that cause dry mouth.
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) — Many seniors experience reduced saliva production, leading to dry mouth. This can contribute to an increased risk of cavities, as saliva plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids and protecting teeth.
Tooth Sensitivity — Aging can lead to worn enamel and receding gums, exposing the sensitive dentin layer of the teeth. This can result in increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks.
Denture-related Issues — Seniors who wear dentures may encounter problems such as ill-fitting appliances, sores, or irritation. Regular check-ups are essential to ensure proper fit and address any discomfort.
Oral Cancer — The risk of oral cancer increases with age. Regular screenings are crucial for early detection and successful treatment.
Osteoporosis-related Jaw Changes — Osteoporosis, a condition affecting bone density, can also impact the jawbone, leading to tooth loss or difficulty wearing dentures.
Diminished Taste and Smell — Aging can impact the senses, including taste and smell, which may impact appetite and nutritional choices, potentially influencing oral health.
Regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene practices, and addressing issues promptly are vital for maintaining good oral health in seniors. Dentists can provide personalized care plans to address these common conditions and enhance the overall quality of life for seniors.

Featured Review of Higson Dental Group - Dentist Grande Prairie by Pam H. on Google
I have been going to this dental office for 15 years or more. Three generations of my family go. Believe me, they go the extra mile to dispel any fears, especially for children, take the time to listen to any concerns, are professional, friendly and above all - are very good dentists, hygienists and dental assistants working in a relaxed atmosphere. Last time I was in I was surprised I could charge my cell phone while waiting for my appointment while my grandchild played in the modern equipped play area. For anyone with time restrictions this office runs on schedule.
