Losing your natural teeth can be emotional and distressing. But with new dental technologies, you can have high-quality dentures that fit comfortably and look good. There are three kinds of fabricated dentures.
Partial Dentures: Similar to a dental bridge, a partial denture replaces several missing teeth. A person may need partial dentures for their front teeth, partial dentures for their back teeth, or some other combination. At Higson Dental, your top Grande Prairie dentist, we will create the perfect set of dentures for your mouth.
Partial dentures are best for people who still have some of their own teeth. They use a cast framework and molded teeth that attach to natural teeth for support. Dental implants are sometimes used to anchor partial dentures. A denture secured with dental implants helps considerably in preventing bone loss. Because they are only partials, they tend to cost less than full dentures or implant dentures.
Full Dentures: These are used to replace all of a person’s upper or lower arch of teeth.
Complete dentures replace a full row of top or bottom teeth. Upper dentures include gum-coloured acrylic and cover the roof of the mouth and bottom dentures curve in the shape of a horseshoe, to give space for the tongue so you can properly eat and talk. Although they do cost more than partial dentures, they are still quite an affordable denture option.
Implant Dentures: Permanently attached to the jaw using several dental implants, implant-secured dentures provide the highest rate of patient satisfaction- and a stable solution.
There are several types of dentures that we offer at our Grande Prairie, Alberta dental office. We will thoroughly assess your oral health during a comprehensive exam, discuss your concerns, and help you choose the type of denture that is right for you and your budget.
Whenever possible, we recommend securing your denture or partial denture with dental implants. Using dental implants to secure an appliance such as a dental bridge affords several key dental health benefits:
Most denture teeth are made of either acrylic resin (plastic) or porcelain. Though both are good options, acrylic dentures tend to be stronger, are easier to fit and adjust, are lighter in weight, and cost less than porcelain. However, porcelain dentures tend to last longer and have less wear on them over time than acrylic. This means you will have to replace the porcelain dentures less often, while you may have to replace acrylic dentures every 5 to 8 years.
Regular visits to your local family dentist will help make for a longer-lasting product and keep you from experiencing problems with your dentures. We can ensure they continue to fit comfortably and stay in good condition. However, just like regular teeth, dentures will have natural wear and your dentist will recommend when it’s time to replace or reline them.
Home care is also important in the longevity of your dentures. According to the Canadian Dental Association dentures need to be cleaned every day, just like regular teeth, to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Daily denture cleaning will help prevent staining on your dentures, bad breath, and gum problems like gingivitis and gum disease. You can clean dentures by removing them from your mouth, rinsing them off to remove food particles, and then using a denture brush to brush with denture cleaner or mild soap gently. It’s recommended NOT to use regular toothpaste to clean dentures as it is too abrasive. Rinse well with water before putting them back in your mouth. You will also want to clean your gums and brush your natural teeth as well, as part of your daily oral maintenance.
It’s also important to take your dentures out at night to not only give your mouth a rest but also soak your dentures in warm (not too hot) water with or without denture cleaner.

The cost of dentures in Alberta can vary depending on the type and quality. Low-cost dentures typically range from $300 to $500 per denture, or $600 to $1,000 for a complete set of lower and upper dentures. These affordable dentures are often cold-cured, a process that makes them temporary due to the lower-quality materials used. As a result, they tend to look more artificial and don’t appear as natural as more expensive, higher-quality dentures.
Mid-priced dentures, which are of better quality, are usually heat-cured and range from $500 to $1,500 per denture, or approximately $1,000 to $3,000 for a complete set. These dentures provide a much more natural appearance and have a longer lifespan compared to cold-cured dentures or temporary options.
When it comes to partial dentures, the cost generally falls between $500 to $1,500 per arch, whether it’s for front or back teeth. The pricing is similar to full dentures because you’re paying for an individual arch. However, partial dentures are often more affordable than full dentures or implant-supported options. These partial dentures are often secured to natural teeth for support or occasionally to dental implants to help prevent bone loss and provide enhanced stability.

Featured Review of Higson Dental Group - Dentist Grande Prairie by Pam H. on Google
I have been going to this dental office for 15 years or more. Three generations of my family go. Believe me, they go the extra mile to dispel any fears, especially for children, take the time to listen to any concerns, are professional, friendly and above all - are very good dentists, hygienists and dental assistants working in a relaxed atmosphere. Last time I was in I was surprised I could charge my cell phone while waiting for my appointment while my grandchild played in the modern equipped play area. For anyone with time restrictions this office runs on schedule.
